Most people buy travel insurance because a visa form asks for it. Then they never read what they bought. So when something goes wrong abroad, the surprises start.
This guide fixes that. It covers what the policy actually pays for, the exact rule for a Schengen visa, and the small print that catches UAE travellers out.

What Travel Insurance Covers
A good policy does far more than satisfy an embassy. Broadly, it handles four things.
- Medical care abroad. Hospital bills, doctor visits and medicine while you travel.
- Emergency evacuation. Getting you to a proper hospital, or home, when local care will not do.
- Trip problems. Cancellation, cut-short trips, missed connections and delays.
- Baggage and papers. Lost luggage, and help when your passport goes missing.
Medical cover matters most. A single night in a European or American hospital can cost more than your whole holiday. Therefore check that limit first, then look at the rest.
The Schengen Rule: EUR 30,000
Here is the one hard number in travel insurance, and it is worth knowing exactly.
To get a Schengen visa, your policy must carry minimum medical cover of EUR 30,000. Also, it must stay valid across every Schengen state, and it must cover your whole stay.
The cover has to include three specific things:
- Urgent medical attention while you are there.
- Emergency hospital treatment.
- Repatriation for medical reasons, including in the event of death.
This rule comes from the EU Visa Code and the linked Council decision. So it applies the same way in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and every other Schengen member. Consulates do not set their own figure.
Buy It in the UAE, Not Abroad
Now a detail almost nobody mentions. The EU guidance says applicants should, in principle, take out the insurance in their country of residence. So if you live in the UAE, buy your Schengen cover here.
Therefore a policy bought in your home country, or online from a random overseas site, can create problems at submission. Ask for a certificate that names the EUR 30,000 limit and the Schengen area clearly.
You can read the official position on the European Commission visa page and in the EU Visa Code.
Where Else You Need Cover
Schengen is the strictest, but it is not alone. Several destinations ask UAE residents for proof of travel insurance, and the rules change often.
- United Kingdom. Not required for the visa, yet strongly advised because private care is costly.
- United States. No visa rule, however medical bills there are the highest in the world.
- Russia and Cuba. These have asked for proof of cover at entry.
- Umrah and Hajj travel. Packages often include cover, so check what you already have.
Rules move, so always confirm the current checklist with the consulate before you book.
Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip?
This choice usually decides your price.
Single trip suits one holiday a year. It costs less up front, and the cover matches your exact dates.
Annual multi-trip suits frequent flyers. It covers unlimited trips over twelve months, though each trip has a maximum length, often 30 or 45 days.
So the maths is simple. If you travel three times a year or more, an annual policy usually wins. Otherwise, buy per trip.
What to Check Before You Buy
First, the medical limit. For Schengen it must reach EUR 30,000. For the US, aim considerably higher.
Second, the geographical scope. “Worldwide excluding USA and Canada” is a common and cheaper option. However, it will not help you in New York.
Third, pre-existing conditions. Most policies exclude them by default. Still, some insurers cover them once declared, so declare everything.
Fourth, the age limits. Cover for older travellers often costs more, and some policies stop at a set age.
Fifth, the sports you plan. Skiing, diving and quad biking usually need an add-on. Otherwise a claim gets refused.
Finally, the 24-hour assistance line. Save the number in your phone before you fly.
Common Exclusions
- Undeclared existing conditions.
- Alcohol or drug related incidents.
- Adventure sports without the right add-on.
- Travel against medical advice.
- Known events, such as a storm already named before you bought.
- Unattended baggage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is travel insurance mandatory for UAE residents?
Not for leaving the country. However, many destinations require it for the visa, and Schengen states always do.
How much cover does a Schengen visa need?
A minimum of EUR 30,000 in medical cover, valid across the Schengen area for your whole stay.
Can I buy travel insurance after booking my flight?
Yes. Still, buy it early, because cancellation cover only works from the day it starts.
Does it cover me in the UAE too?
Usually not. Travel policies cover you outside your country of residence, so you need separate health cover at home.
What if I have a pre-existing condition?
Declare it. Some insurers will still cover you, sometimes for an extra premium. Hiding it, though, can void the whole policy.
Are my parents covered on a family policy?
It depends on their age and the policy terms. So check the age limit before you assume.
How fast can I get a certificate?
Usually the same day, which matters when a visa appointment is close.
