Medical Insurance for Visit Visa UAE: The Official Rules

Planning a trip to the UAE, or bringing family over? Then you have probably read that you need medical insurance for visit visa applications. You have also probably seen three different answers about what it must cover.

So let us settle it with the official source. Everything below comes from the UAE Government portal and the federal authorities, not from agent websites.

Medical insurance for visit visa UAE requirements
The official UAE portal sets out exactly when health insurance is required.

Does the UAE Require Medical Insurance for a Visit Visa?

Honestly, it depends on which visa you apply for. There is no single blanket rule, and that is where most confusion starts.

So here is what the official portal actually states.

Multiple Entry 5-Year Tourist Visa

Here the rule is clear. To obtain it, the applicant must have a valid health insurance policy applicable in the UAE, valid for 180 days. In addition, you need a bank balance of USD 4,000 over the last six months, plus a ticket showing your onward or return journey.

Visit Stays Longer Than Two Months

Instead, here the duty falls on the sponsor. If someone enters the UAE on a visit visa and stays more than two months, the sponsor must subscribe to the health insurance scheme for them.

Golden Visa Applicants

Similarly, Golden Visa applicants must show health insurance for themselves and their family. Also, it has to stay valid for the whole period they live in the UAE.

Medical Treatment Entry Permits

Finally, if you are coming for treatment, you must include health insurance in the papers for the permit.

Requirements differ by visa type, so check the checklist for yours.

About Those “AED 150,000 Minimum” Claims

Now for something you will not read elsewhere. Search this topic and you will find blogs quoting a fixed minimum cover of AED 100,000, or AED 150,000, or a set price of AED 40 for 30 days.

Those figures do not appear on the official UAE Government portal. We checked. The portal asks for a valid health insurance policy that works in the UAE, and it must last 180 days. However, the portal names no fixed sum insured and no fixed price.

So treat those numbers with care. Each insurer sets its own limits and prices. Some visa channels also add their own rules. Therefore the safe approach is simple. Check the checklist for your exact visa type on the ICP portal or with the emirate authority handling your application.

If an agent tells you a figure is “the government minimum”, ask them to show you where it is published.

What Your Medical Insurance for Visit Visa Should Cover

The cover must do more than tick a box. It has to work if something goes wrong. So look for these:

  • Emergency treatment and hospital admission in the UAE. Above all, check this one.
  • Doctor visits and tests.
  • Prescribed medicine during the trip.
  • Ambulance transport to hospital.
  • Medical evacuation or repatriation if treatment at home becomes necessary.
  • A validity period that matches or exceeds what your visa type requires.
  • A 24-hour assistance line that answers in a language you speak.

How to Choose Medical Insurance for a Visit Visa

First, match the validity to the visa. The 5-year tourist visa asks for 180 days of validity. So a 30-day policy will not satisfy it.

Second, check the age limits. Many visitor policies limit cover for older travellers, or price it very differently. Therefore confirm before you buy for parents.

Third, read the pre-existing condition wording. Most visitor policies leave out conditions you already had. Still, some offer limited emergency cover for them, so ask.

Fourth, confirm the insurer is licensed in the UAE. The policy must work in the UAE. So the authority may reject a foreign one.

Finally, keep the certificate handy. You may need to upload it with the application, and again at the airport.

What Drives the Price?

We will not quote you a figure here, because honest prices depend on your own details. Still, these are the levers that move it:

  • Age of the traveller. Notably, this matters most. Cover for a parent in their seventies costs far more than for a young adult.
  • Length of the policy. A 180-day policy costs more than a 30-day one.
  • Level of cover. A higher medical limit raises the price.
  • Number of people. Family policies often work out cheaper per head.
  • Any add-ons, such as wider evacuation cover.

So when you compare two quotes, check the limits first. A cheaper policy with a low medical limit can leave you badly short in a real emergency. Therefore compare like with like, then pick on price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is medical insurance for visit visa applications a must in the UAE?

It depends on the visa. For the 5-year tourist visa, the portal asks for a health insurance policy that works in the UAE and lasts 180 days. Other visit types carry their own rules.

What is the minimum coverage amount required?

The portal names no fixed minimum. So check the list for your own visa type. Do not trust a figure you read on a blog.

How long must the policy be valid?

Generally, for the 5-year tourist visa, 180 days. For other categories, match the policy to the length of stay.

Who pays if a visitor stays longer than two months?

Then the sponsor must subscribe to the health insurance scheme for that person.

Does a travel insurance policy from my home country work?

Not always. Instead, the rule asks for a policy that works in the UAE. So check it first.

Do Golden Visa holders need health insurance?

Yes. Moreover, that cover must stay valid for their whole residence.

Can I buy the policy after arriving?

No. Usually you need the certificate at application stage. So arrange it before you travel.
